The Chief Scientist’s final report into the coal seam gas industry has found that the industry is viable and that “CSG extraction and related technologies are mature and Australia is well equipped to manage their application”.

The report reiterates the findings of the Chief Scientist’s initial report of July 2013, that a properly regulated and monitored industry working to a high industry standard has a place in Australia’s energy mix. This is particularly important to ensure affordable energy for households and industry.

The report also notes the importance of a clear legislative framework, rigorous compliance and transparency and a commitment by all parties that should any problems arise, they will be addressed quickly and effectively.

The Chief Scientist recognises that some stakeholders have concerns and there is some lack of trust in the industry. However, she also recognises there can be benefits to individuals and communities and the risks can be managed.

Santos is committed to delivering our proposed Narrabri Gas Project safely and sustainably. The findings will give added confidence to the community that, with the appropriate safeguard and conditions in place, natural gas from coal seams can become a substantial energy solution for NSW.
